Kenneth Tam Attends First ‘Sci-Fi on the Rock’

The first of April, 2007, saw the launch of a new science fiction event in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, and Kenneth Tam and Iceberg Publishing were in attendance. Sci-Fi on the Rock is Atlantic Canada’s newest and largest science fiction event, this year being hosted at the Hotel Mount Pearl (neighboring the city of St. John’s) in Newfoundland. Attending as an author guest, Kenneth Tam had the chance to connect again with Atlantic Canadian readers of his Equations and Defense Command series, to sign books, and to run a workshop on writing.

“Conventions are always a lot of fun,” Kenneth says, “but it’s a special treat to be able to go home to Newfoundland to attend one.”

Kenneth was born in Newfoundland, but moved away from the province in 1996 with his family.

“I try to get back as much as I can, and Iceberg has had several very successful events in Newfoundland over the years, but this convention gives us a whole new opportunity to return home,” he elaborates.

The inaugural Sci-Fi on the Rock was a single day event, but strong local and regional support for the convention has already led to plans to extend the 2008 edition into a two-day event, and possibly expand the guest list. Backed by local media coverage, and garnering over 300 attendees, Sci-Fi on the Rock’s future as an annual Atlantic Canadian fan event is bright.

“I hope they don’t mind us coming back next year,” Kenneth smiles. “We’d certainly love to return!”

Kenneth’s next appearance as an author guest will be at Polaris (formerly Toronto Trek) 21, Canada’s largest fan-run science fiction event. Being held July 6-8 2007, the event will see the debut of The Vengeance Equation, the sixth Equations novel, as well as the fifth and sixth Defense Command novels, The Gallant Few and The Jupiter Patrol.
