The Reprisal Launches in Waterloo
First World War soldiers boarded a 1923 train car in uptown Waterloo on Friday night, taking part in the launch of Kenneth Tam’s latest novel. The Reprisal is the third book in the His Majesty’s New World alternate history series, the first two volumes of which were released at Sci-Fi on the Rock in Newfoundland in 2008 and 2009.
“We missed coming home for the launch of The Reprisal,” Kenneth says, “but we took the opportunity of doing an event in southern Ontario to introduce many new readers to the series.”
In the His Majesty’s New World alternate history series, explorers in the rocky mountains discover gateways to another planet in the year 1881. The British Empire and the United States quickly partner to colonize this rich new world, thus changing history as we know it.
Following the first two books in the series, The Grasslands and The Frontier, The Reprisal joins the alternate timeline in 1919, when the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, an American drifter named Smith, and two mysterious ladies are plunged into adventures on the new world.
“This series has seen a great deal of success so far,” Kenneth explains. “We had a packed train car for the event, full of both newcomers and returning readers eager to pick up the third installment in the series.”
Friday’s launch took place on a historical train maintained by the Waterloo Central Railway. Built in 1923, the Canadian Pacific car is virtually identical to those built in 1919. The venue allowed attendees to enter the time period in which The Reprisal is set.
Readers also had a chance to meet living historians from the Canadian Military Heritage Society (CMHS). These men, who recreate the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, have a history with His Majesty’s New World, having taken part in the initial photo shoot for the series, which provided all the cover images for the book so far.
“Thanks to the Waterloo Central Railway and the men of the CMHS, we had a truly unique event,” Kenneth concludes. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with both organizations as the series progresses in years ahead.”
The Reprisal is already available at all major online booksellers, and along with new editions of the first two books in the His Majesty’s New World series, will be available through all major Canadian, American and UK bookstores in the coming weeks.
